Music For 18 Musicians LP (Nonesuch)
Music For 18 Musicians LP (Nonesuch)
"Music for 18 Musicians" is a minimalist composition dating back to 1974-1976, with its debut performance in 1976 and a recording release in 1978. Although named for 18 musicians, it often requires more due to the demand for multiple instruments per player. The piece revolves around eleven chords, with each chord inspiring a distinct musical section, collectively called "Pulses." Reich was intrigued by the psychoacoustic effects of a larger ensemble, and the use of human breath in clarinets and voices provided structure and rhythm. The composition garnered praise for its harmonic development and acoustic warmth. It is considered a pivotal work in minimalist music. Reissued by Nonesuch Records in 2018 as a double LP.
