Born through adversity, the Koln Concert is considered by many to be one of the greatest jazz albums ever. Suffering from back problems and sleeplessness, just having finished a long drive from Zurich that afternoon, Jarrett was confronted with a baby grand piano that had faulty pedals, a tinny high end, and an almost non-existent bass register. From that, he improvised a masterpiece.

Relying mostly on ostinatos and harmonic vamps of one or two chords, Jarrett spun three incredibly unified and compelling musical tales of great delicacy and feeling.
