In for a Penny, in for a Pound CD (Pi Recordings)
"In for a Penny, In for a Pound" is saxophonist, flutist, and composer Henry Threadgill's exploration of a unique system for blending composition with group improvisation. This work with his ensemble Zooid represents a departure from conventional jazz forms, introducing a polyphonic platform that encourages improvisation with an emphasis on counterpoint and the creation of innovative harmonies. Threadgill, a founding member of the AACM, continues to push the boundaries of jazz and is celebrated for his elusive compositions, unconventional timbres, and rhythmic complexity. The album is composed of four movements, with each one spotlighting a member of Zooid. Their unique approach to improvisation, driven by Threadgill's intervallic system, creates an ever-surprising musical experience.
