Christine Mantakara- 'Psychedelic Rooster', 2021
This little group of paintings came about as an attempt to unblock myself creatively and get imagery flowing without judgement - letting my subconscious be the art director. After decades of being away from the practice of making art, I found myself seriously blocked. Putting marks on paper, settling on a subject - all of it was hard. I knew the only way to get past this paralysis was to just start generating imagery - anything, it didn’t matter what. The act of doing would move me forward. So I began with found objects: five little gessoed canvases I found on the street, and magazine cutouts of animals. I arranged the animals on the canvases and made environments for them. The theme of city vs country wasn’t planned. It just evolved that way. Also not intended is how they ended up being a series of self portraits at various stages of life. The pipe dreaming pig could’ve been me gazing out my kitchen window at age 4, imagining she could see the Statue of Liberty past the Boston skyline. The goat could be me after college, trying on a party girl persona. The sheep, hiding in bed, paralyzed by fear, surrounded by photos of handsome men. The dog and the rooster, maybe those are realities to come.
