This set of paintings celebrates the artists Nina Simone, John Coltrane, and Josh Roseman. Each of these individuals has resonated with me internally, on a deep level, to the extent where their music as well as their person, has become part of my internal emotional landscape.
Additionally, making these paintings was an exercise in releasing judgment about working from photographs. For most of my life I’ve harbored the belief that using photographs as source material for paintings is a lesser way to work, when compared with working directly from life. But, I got to a point where I needed to flex my painting muscles by whatever means necessary, using whatever was available. These works are a product of that practice.
