Bells & Prophecy Expanded CD (ESP Disk)
Albert Ayler's groundbreaking work with Gary Peacock and Sonny Murray resulted in the influential "Spiritual Unity" album recorded on July 10, 1964. ESP-Disk' introduced the trio a decade later with "Prophecy," an earlier recording by poet Paul Haines from a 91st Street club performance. These Cellar Café recordings are expanded with six additional tracks from the same gig. Also included is the transitional "Bells," recorded on May 1, 1965, marking Ayler's move to a denser, larger sound. "Bells" combines "Holy Ghost," an unnamed theme, and the titular composition, serving as the recorded debut of saxophonist Charles Tyler.
